Finding that next excellent hirer is like sifting through a pile of rocks to find that hidden gem stone. I have countless stories of exceptional individuals that were discovered and turn out to be an amazing long-term performing assets to their organization.
Like most things in life it all starts by being self-aware and open to all possibilities. So many Talent Managers that I meet have boxes/categories that they slot potential candidates into. This is a big mistake and a fundamental misunderstanding about what elements actually create Talent but more importantly how that individual effectively executes that Talent.
The place to start is with what I would call Natural Talent. This is the basket of talents given to you the day you were born. Everyone has a specific gift or ability that is hard wired into their DNA and provides them with a natural competitive advantage. The further education and polishing of that Talent is what makes good better and better the best. It has been an area of my personal research for the last thirty years in how that portion of talent can be perfected under the watchful eye of a mentor or manager to be the best in show. This type of Exceptionalism is what forms the core cultures of many successful brands as they aspire to optimize through training the talent of their team.
Learned or Acquired Talent is the second half of the Talent Equation. Yes, we all have those things that we do well but we also have those things that we must put the sweat equity into to make us complete. Many of my most talented students came from this area as their persistence and determination gave them the spark to be successful at anything they put their mind to accomplish.
So in developing this Natural and Learned Talent in a consistent process of advancement, I have seen many of my students of lesser ability achieve to a higher standard compared to peers with much stronger abilities.
Three personal attributes define my best “High Flying” Millennials. The first is a remarkable sense of Total Clarity that is not defused by the greatest adversary of our 365 24/7 Society; Distraction. They have the ability to unplug from this jumble of noise and perform with total efficient any task that requires their Critical Thinking skills. The second measure is Precision which they execute flawlessly as they QC all their work repeatedly as their lofty objective is to create a perfected end product. This Culture of Exceptionalism is a lifestyle and the manner that they overcome the constant Disruption that is part of the highly stimulated environment that we all exist within.
The final attribute was a sense of Urgency in their ability to communicate and respond with others. This set them head and shoulders above the pack and made them the natural leaders and the best “Stand Out” talent that even if you were not self-aware was immediately so obvious.
So Clarity, Precision and Urgency are the professional tools that I am constantly looking for as I sift through the pile of rocks looking for the gem stone. As these attributes of resilience are what is required today to counter an every increasingly demanding operating environment.
